Body - Transporting

Fletch

How to get the body home... I have some great advice here that I wish I had known when I transported my body.

When I went to pick up my finished body I rented this 17' U-Haul truck.  The problem with U-Haul trucks are that they have the wheel-wells located inside the truck storage area, unlike a Budget Truck which the inside area is flat.  If I were to transport my body again, I would highly recommend a Budget Truck!

I thought a trailer would work but the body measures (over the rear tires) 82", so this 7' wide (interior dimension) worked for the haul home.

My baby's first night in the garage - September 2001

I wrote and asked Andy what his car width was...

Endre (Andy) Bujtas

The 80.3 inch width is a MAXIMUM body width value - excluding the mirrors. It occurs some point over the rear wheel wells since the body is quite curved - as looking from the top down to the body. I measured my body some 3 years ago and it was this width value. The car/body is quite wide. My car barely fits into a closed car transport trailer.

There is a detailed "manual" that Dale has created for you to view (in regards to this section). This instruction manual is on how he built his IFG Phantom Roadster. (click on his logo to visit his web site)

Dwight Booth

My ship just rolled in!
I am very tired unpacking and moving things around in the work area but this note must go out.

We all do our research on bodies, engines , drivetrains, HVAC, cooling, suspension but what do you rely on when it comes time to get it to your house???

Well, I made several inquiries and found the primo transport in:

They are specialist in car transport for vehicles like ours.
I talked to Collin to interview him in:
- what they do and how they do it.
- how am I kept informed in the process
- are they insured for full value of body, components, chassis
- delivery time
- how does it get out of the truck into my garage
- and the list goes on.

I also had multiple conversations with Bryce about deliver schedule and things I needed to do here on my end to receive it.

Well Dave and Pam were my caretakers of the day. I had received multiple phone calls from them on where they were and the ETA to get to my place. Yes, my actual house and not a warehouse dock miles away. I live in the city in a residential area.

They showed up on time and the show began.
The semi is a highly specialized unit that has a crane on the insdie that will saddle up your baby and gently cradle it out the back door to a dolly waiting on the ground.

All the support bars are padded and blankets and cardborad tapped in areas just to make sure it does not get scratched. I watched as the TLC was applied to not only my parts but the 3 Cobras housed in there as well!!

No strong arm gorilla tactiques of throwing boxes or kicking stuff around.
Each box was lifted and placed in a new location as if were packed with crystal glass.

The hoist craddle took several attempts to get just right for balance and out it came. Sitting on the dolly, we uncoupled the hoist and readily pushed it up the driveway 40 feet into the garage.

They also helped me get it on to jack stands and make sure that it was solid and stable. Dave pointed out several things for adjustment prior to lowering the jack onto the stands.

We cleaned up the parts out of the yard and the truck was readied for the next transport job the same day.

My neighbor is a professional car hauler and I initually contacted them about doing it. They declined due to insurance reasons. They also watched Dave do his magic and later commented that they would not be in competion any time soon!

The price is competitive or less than several others I looked at by $300-$500 minimum and the other guys just haul big cargo not cars.

So don't forget the most important part of your project....receiving it intact.

JOB WELL DONE by STEWART TRANSPORT,

Thanks Dave, Pame, Bryce and Collin.
