There is a detailed "manual" that Dale has created for you to view (in regards to this section). This instruction manual is on how he built his IFG Phantom Roadster. (click on his logo to visit his web site)

Here is the Passenger door in the raised position. I spent some time reinforcing the hinge and the part under the mirror, tying it into the area on the opposite side of the hinge mount. Even with the outer door off the door has become quite solid. The other door skin will make this very solid. I discovered that grade 5 minimums are required to bolt the hinge as there is a huge amount of torque on the hinge area. The door also opens at least to the OEM point and then can be adjusted to open several more inches.

I went to the local Arvin Meritor distributor and ordered a unique size air strut for the doors. I had found that the one I had was not strong enough. The one I got was adjustable! starting with 250# of initial pressure. Now, even with the door complete, it is a challenge to push the door down and I was able to use the OEM mounting locations!!! There is not really a part number because they Built it for me but I can get more for about $125 USD (per pair) - expensive but I am hoping it is totally worth it.

I closed in the drivers door, it looks real good, I will have some work to do with the gap but It should come together nicely.

This is a shot of the heavy duty shock that I got.

It is pressure adjustable once everything is done and it also has an end damper so it does not slam at the top. You will notice the variety of mounting locations. Where it is now is the most OEM location. Where it leaves the door it only moves about 1" so no huge openings. The lower mount is where I had to mount the weaker shock to make it just barely work.

In the shot you also see the Fiero window motor and the pile of wires that are in the door. 2-speaker, 2-pwr window motor, 2-door jam alarm, 2-microswitch, 4-electric mirror - 12 wires all together, I over killed on the guage too.

This is the new shock, lower mount.

It is a 1" tube tapped for the ball mount. It is actually two pieces with a treaded rod in the middle which allows it to be romoved if the body ever had to come off. It is in the OEM location and looks fabulous.

When the car is ready for paint I will seal in the gap with seam sealer and paint it all to blend into the body.

This picture shows how my door shocks (gas springs) now sit inside the doors after the mod.

They are as close to the door frame as I can get them.

This picture shows the extent in which my doors go up. In order to allow my windows to move completely up and down, I had to relocate the door shock mount on the body side. As you can see the new location is much higher than the location suggested by IFG.

This allows the shock to be placed closer towards interior and away from the window glass. I made a small bracket from 3/16 flat stock for the ball stud mount. In addition to a better location, it also looks better up there as well.

My doors are finally completed. Unfortunately I can not take credit for them. Robert at Exoticglass in Louisiana got them done for me. I took pictures of his work and the doors are perfect.

You can see the strut hole Robert made. It is in the shape of a Letter "L".

Hey Everybody, I know some of you have IFG kits and was wondering what the length of your door shocks is. The CRP car we are building now has 19.5" shocks from eye to eye, and the piston travel is 8.25". I have looked at some of the doors in the diaries and some door shocks look really long. The reason I'm asking is that the door shock is limiting our door travel. Our doors clear the upper windshield pillar by 5-6" and because of the shock, the door sits 1" lower than the pillar. We are trying to make this as authentic as possible and locate the mounts as on the Original. I may try to order other shocks so we can Keep the clearance.

I have strong arm lift shocks 4782.....0173 Thses are two seperate #'s on the shocks. They arem the doo shocks that come with te adl kit's so if they are not right let me know.

Also do you mount these shocks with the door open? It seems that way!
