This is the engine that will power my Phantom SE - a 406 C.I.D. small
block Chevy rated at 435 HP @ 6500 RPM (the curve shows more like 460
HP, but well be conservative) and with a torque of 425 ft-lbs @ 4800 RPM.
The intake manifold you see came with the crate motor, but will not be
part of the final induction system. It will be replaced with a manifold
to mount 4 Webers. The exhaust system will be custom fabricated using
the tubing supplied from Headers by Ed.
One goal in my design is to keep the center of mass of the car as low
as possible. This is why you see the Alternator and A/C Compressor mounted
on the bottom of the engine instead of the top. The A/C compressor you
see is a Sanden 508 from Vintage Air, and the Alternator is a specially
modified Delco that puts out 140 Amps - enough to power a small town.
It should handle all the additional electrical loads.
The blue cap you see near the rear of the transaxle is for the return
line from my transmission cooling system. The transmission will be cooled
by a Perma-Cool model 201 oil cooler mounted in the rear, and the oil
will be circulated through a Tilton transmission oil pump. |
