Front - Headlight - Body Mounting Installation

As we build more, we learn more... this body mounting method is what (at first) thought would be the best method, but as it turns out mounting the headligts to the chassis frame would be a better method.

Below is what I did as my first attempt / method of mounting.

NOTE: In the mounting installation of my headlight the photograph angles are a bit confusing, therefore I am ONLY going to illustrate photos from the left side - drivers side headlight.

I used a floor jack, which worked great for raising and lowering the headlight during the test fitting and mounting stages.

Front Bracket:

Bracket material -  I went to the hardware store, in the section for framing a house or hanging joists I found and used an 11” Angle Anchor.  The hole is all ready cut the width is 2”. I don’t have a break press in my shop so I just used a simple vice grip and hammer and bent these bracket to a custom fit.

I have made this style of brackets for the front of the lights.

Where my fingers are in this photo you can see the headlight has a permeate mounting bolt for the headlight frame, this needs to be removed (cut off) and drilled out (it's the only way you can install the headlight - you can not install it with that bolt in – the headlight need to slide on top of this bracket and it can not be done if the bolt is hanging down).

There is not a lot of mounting area for the “outside” front brackets. Side note- I have NOT cut the bolt off YET, because it helps me locate my bracket.

This is the bottom view of the headlight in it’s original factory condition – you need to remove the two front stud-bolts. The stud-bolt removed and drilled out

To mount the headlight I will place a 3/8” bolt and nut into my hole location

Rear Bracket
This simple hat bracket works great for the rear, it has a 62-degree angle - at least that's what my body slope (ID) is measured at.

You can see the mounting location in this photo.

I have inserted a 3/8” threaded (12” long) rod to check the fit of the headlight.  After testing the fit of the headlight, the rod lengths are actually 7” and the “outside” rod was 8”.  I use four 3/8” nuts per rod, with locking washers.

The following pictures are illustrating the headlight mounting from different angles.

These are photos and comments from other builders about there installation methods.

I wanted a easy system to mount the headlights so I fabricated these two brackets out of aluminum. I used Andy's directions and made some studs on 1/8" steel plate which I glass on the underside. Nice, clean, easy.

This is the method I am using to mount the headlights.

I glassed in some Andy Studs. The only down fall will be the adjustment with be a bit limited.
