The seatbelts are the fiero ones, our local upholstery store sells seat belt material, so we will take them apart and replacing the cloth parts of the belt with new black cloth, its easier than you think.

I spent Saturday at the wreckers and I have the definitive method for seatbelts - I think! The seatbelt spool is from a 91 mazda pickup - it was compact and has a large spool with lots of room to adjust the spring.

The upper loop that mounts on the firewall was from a 84 Mazda RX7, it is almost identical to the Lambo loop and is black. The catch mechanism is from a late 80's mazda 323. It was also black and is on a heavy wire like the real car. The web material is $2.50 a metre and I need 3.5 metres/side. The parts were only $5 a side the belt is $9 that is CDN!!! Total $14 a side CDN

This is the floor mounted catch for the seatbelt.

I looked everywhere for something very close to the original with the braided wire stem and a black body, tada! I should mention that I got new web material and they whole set up was about $25 for both sides!! That's CDN by the way, so about $15 US

Seat Belts and Firewall

The seatbelts I chose are perfect. I need to move them up a bit on the firewall (they are not bolted on yet that is why they look a bit off. I built a substantial structure behind the firewall to support the belts. It is never going to move. The thread on the seatbelt bolts is M12X1.25 - a unique and hard to locate tap!!

The firewall - (ha) is from .25 hardboard. Not much resistance from fire I'm afraid. I will be adding another layer to more closely simulate the original around the window opening.

There is a detailed "manual" that Dale has created for you to view (in regards to this section). This instruction manual is on how he built his IFG Phantom Roadster. (click on his logo to visit his web site)

I found seat belt retracts with black belts out of a 87 Nissan Z car! The latches I'm using are out of a 86 ( I Think ) Maxima. They are a little big and with the blister covering my water pump pulley they are higher than I would have liked. but for 10 bucks! They will do!
